“One Day, One Woman, and a Story That Shattered Me – Straw”

Straw - This One Drained Me Emotionally, but in a Good Way

See ehn, Straw is not the kind of movie you watch casually while scrolling on your phone. You need to focus, because from the first five minutes, the tension just starts building like say na pressure cooker

The story follows Janiyah, played by Taraji P. Henson and let me just say, that woman acted her soul out. Janiyah is a struggling single mother who is just trying to survive one more day. But life? Life said “not today.” One thing after another keeps happening, she loses her job, she can’t get medicine for her child, she’s about to be evicted and then somehow she ends up in a bank hostage situation.

You’ll be shouting “how did we get here?” 😩

πŸ’” The Plot Twist Knocked Me Out

Just when I thought I had the story figured out, Tyler Perry hit me with a twist I did not see coming. Turns out, her daughter Aria had actually died the night before, and a lot of what we were seeing was Janiyah’s mind breaking down.

I had to pause the movie and just sit there. Like... wow. You could feel her pain so deeply, especially when you realise she was holding on to grief and guilt and nobody around her could see how broken she was.

πŸ”₯ Standout Performances

Taraji P. Henson — A QUEEN

She didn’t just act. She lived that character. You could feel the madness, the desperation, the love she had for her child it was raw.

Sherri Shepherd also surprised me. Very strong performance as the bank manager. And Teyana Taylor? She really embodied the “don’t-mess-with-me” detective role.

πŸ’ Real Talk – I Felt This Movie Personally

Tyler Perry wasn’t just telling a story, he was preaching. That whole narrative about how society pushes women, especially Black single moms, to carry heavy burdens and still show up strong? It hit.

I know women like Janiyah in real life. Maybe you do too. And that’s what made this movie feel too real.

🀷🏽‍♀️ What I Didn’t Like

The ending? E be like Perry started shouting with the script. It got a bit dramatic sha.

Some characters in that bank were behaving like they forgot they were in a life-or-death situation. But I’ll allow it emotions were high.

⭐ My Rating: 8/10

Straw is heavy, but worth it. If you’re in the mood for something deep, emotional, and thought-provoking this is your film. Just make sure you’re ready for some tears and tension.

πŸ’¬ Have you watched Straw yet? What did you think about the twist with Aria?
